Who is couples therapy for?
According to studies, most couples wait on average 6 years to get help. My stance is that it is never too early or too late. The couples therapy methods I practice are based on Gottman principles which have 40+ years of data proving their effectiveness. The methods encompass communication, listening, shared meaning, conflict resolution and many other helpful skills to enrich and revive any relationship regardless of the current state.
How does couples therapy work?
The first 2-3 hours are assessment and treatment planning; meaning that I get to know you as a couple and individually. This involves getting your stories/history and some online assessments for each partner to fill out. Then we get together and review the results to discuss the relationship’s strengths and challenges to put together a treatment plan (i.e what we will work on) and how to measure the progress. Some couples find doing these initial steps in an intensive 3-4 hour session optimal before reverting to an every other week pace, which I agree builds momentum and is productive.
The length of couples therapy varies by couple and what is going on in the relationship. The ultimate goal of couples therapy using Gottman principles is that the couple learns skills so that they eventually won’t need the therapist long term and can transition into periodic check-ins for maintenance. .
I am level 3 trained in Gottman methods which shows my dedication and passion for this particular couples therapy https://gottmanreferralnetwork.com/therapists/kelly-weber
